AMD Gains Market Share Momentum In x86 Client CPU Segment In Q4 2023 With Latest Ryzen CPUs, EPYC Sees Slight Decline 1

AMD's client "Ryzen" CPUs have gained market share in Q4 2023 while the server "EPYC" segment saw a slight decline.

AMD's Strong Client CPU Portfolio Pushes x86 Market Share To 20%, EPYC Servers at 23% With Slight Decline In Q4 2023

The latest market share statistics are out from Mercury Research and Jon Peddie Research, both covering the client and server side of AMD and Intel CPUs. The last few months have been packed with tons of launches including AMD's Ryzen 8040 CPUs, Ryzen 8000G APUs, 4th Gen EPYC Siena, Intel 14th Gen Raptor Lake Refresh, Intel 1st Gen Core Ultra "Meteor Lake" and 5th Gen Emerald Rapids Xeon CPUs.

All of these being Q4 2023 launches means they won't be accounted for within the Q4 2023 CPU share statistics. Still, both companies were offering strong server, desktop, and laptop products before these so those will be reflected in the latest stats. With that said, these new lineups will be huge for the emerging AI PC segment which is expected to take the market by storm this year.

Starting with Mercury Research, we first have to talk about the client side where AMD witnessed increased market share thanks to the additional supply of its Ryzen 7000 desktop and mobile CPUs. Its desktop segment grew from 19.2% in Q3 2023 to 19.8% in Q4 2023 while the mobile segment grew from 19.5% in Q3 2023 to 20.3% in Q4 2023. This is a gain of 1.2 points for the desktop and 3.9 points for the mobile segment.

On the server front, AMD's 4th Gen EPYC CPU portfolio has been relatively strong, leading against Intel in both performance and efficiency. The server segment saw a slight decline from 23.3% in Q3 2023 to 23.1% in Q4 2024 but it was still a relatively large 5.5 point gain versus the past year. Given that AMD has recently secured major supercomputing and HPC deals from the likes of Amazon, META, etc, we can see their share to further increase and reach the 30% share (minus IOT). Following is what AMD had to say about the latest stats:

Mercury has just released the PC Processor Report – First Quarter, 2024 (AMD Q4,23) and noted that AMD gained significant server, desktop and notebook revenue share Y/Y driven by demand for 4th Gen EPYC and Ryzen 7000 series processors.

  • Server revenue share increased 4.0% points Y/Y and 1.1% Q/Q to a record 31.1%.  As we noted during our fourth quarter earnings call, we had record server revenue in the fourth quarter.
  • Client revenue share increased 2.0% points Y/Y.  Revenue share declined 1.6% Q/Q driven by mix shift.

Looking at unit share AMD gained both unit and revenue share Y/Y and Q/Q.

  • Server unit share increased 5.5% points Y/Y and declined 0.2% points Q/Q.
    • The Q/Q unit share decline reflects a larger number of our competitor’s server processors being sold into non-data center (for example workstation) applications and higher Atom shipments.
  • Client unit share increased 3.1% points Y/Y and 0.8% points Q/Q with share gains in both desktop and mobile.

On the other hand, Jon Peddie Research has also shared its CPU shipments statistics which show that the segment was up 7% versus the last quarter and up 22% versus the previous year. The total number of CPU shipments reached 66 million units in Q4 2024. Notebook CPUs amount to the most shipments with a 70% share versus 30% for desktops. For the server side of things, the shipments increased by 2.8% versus the last quarter but fell by 26% versus the previous year.

Another interesting statistic shared by Jon Peddie is the total amount of PC iGPUs shipment which have reached 60 million units, an increase of 18% versus the prior year. Intel amounts to the highest number of iGPUs shipped with a market share of 84% versus AMD's 16%. AMD expanded its APU range to the desktop segment recently with the Ryzen 8000G APUs which offer powerful integrated graphics that rival some of the most popular discrete entry-level cards. These APUs are designed for budget and mainstream users and can lead to even higher shares for AMD shortly.

It should be mentioned that Intel's recently released Meteor Lake CPUs with Xe-LPG iGPUs have brought them on par with AMD's top iGPU offerings based on the RDNA 3 architecture. This will heat the iGPU space as we move forward and further crunch away entry-level discrete graphics share.
