The one guy who gave a review on Best Buy ran some benchmarks. He got 10,350 in Timespy graphics, vs ~9,200 for the 7600S I've seen in other reviews. So about 12.5%. I'd definitely pay 5% more for the 7700S. It's right at 4060 and 3070 Ti level.

The 7700 has 14% more compute units, boosts to a higher speed, and has faster ram. Theoretically it should be faster than that... but it would need more power than the 7600, and if they have the same cooling hardware that won't be possible, since the 7600 version is already at the limit.

The bigger GPUs have better speed/W generally. 4070 is better than 4060 which is better than 4050 in efficiency. And they are all more efficient at lower wattage than higher.

In everything I've seen it's about the same, and faster than a 4050. For the money this is definitely a good deal. Good screen, good battery life, etc.

EDIT: Disregard what I wrote before. I just found out about the 7700s version that Best Buy put up for sale a few days ago that doesn't have the upgraded CPU and screen. Not clear how the 7600s and 7700s compare in real world performance so not sure if $50 is worth it.

On paper, the 7700S is 30% faster than the 7600S and is on par with the RTX 4060, more or less. It also has better thermal efficiency. So, yes $50 is worth the upgrade if you can afford it. Otherwise, this is still a very capable gaming laptop too.

Thanks for chiming in. May I ask where you see that the 7700s has better thermal efficiency? Notebookcheck says that the 7600s and 7700s are both based on the exact same chip with the 7600s effectively being a cut down 7700s with a lower power draw limit.

By my best guess, it's worth about $50. The chip in the 7700S is pretty similar to the desktop RX 7600. There's nothing really within $50 in AMD's portfolio though, so comparing is tough. If you care about graphics, it's probably not worth the hassle of switching.

I was about to say that it theoretically should be about 14% faster. Of course, it's always diminishing returns with larger chips, so 12.5% sounds about spot on.

Personally, I was hoping for RTX 3060 laptops around $500. This is similar and $200 higher. But no great offerings ever showed up, so this is about the best deal I've seen for a capable mobile GPU. If I needed to buy, I'd probably bite on this. But my old one is still chugging, so I'll wait.

When Gizmo tested this laptop, the GPU seemed to be capped in the low 90W range, but that might just be a consequence of the total (CPU and GPU) cap of 120W. In other words the GPU probably can go to 120W in theory, if the CPU has zero load. Max temps were in the high 70s for the GPU, and 95 on the CPU when gaming.

Having a combined power limit is weird isn't it? I know my MSI isn't like that. The GPU and CPU have independent limits.

Generally I don't like being power or temperature limited because it tends to cause glitches. The CPU can't be undervolted unfortunately, but Afterburner should work fine on the GPU. I haven't seen anyone try UC and OC though.

That's the thing, in a laptop in particular, the limits are never truly independent. Heat is heat, and the cooling system can only move so much. It usually goes out one or two small vents, with one or two shared fans, and often times a shared combined heatsink. The combined "limit" allows the CPU and GPU to load balance to maximize overall throughput, instead of letting one chip produce all of the heat even if it's not the throughput bottleneck.
