Chinese GeForce RTX 4090D without OC support

Same graphics card name, but not really the specs.

NVIDIA is set to release a special edition of its GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card specifically tailored for the Chinese market. The card is reportedly called GeForce RTX 4090D, (with ‘D’ stands for ‘Dragon’ for the next Chinese New Year). This model is based on the AD102 model, and it is designed to navigate around the U.S. restrictions that initially obstructed the import of the original RTX 4090 into China. While the new model is anticipated to have a reduced speed, this adjustment ensures compliance with the restrictions.

Rumors circulating on Benchlife suggest that shipments of GA102-250 GPUs to China will commence this week, which could result in full disclosure of the card’s specifications. More importantly, the site has now confirmed that these cards will lack support for overclocking or, at best, have severely restricted overclocking capabilities. We speculated that this may happen, and there is a good reason behind it.

RTX 4090D vs. RTX 4090

  • AD102-250 GPU with fewer CUDA cores
  • Lower TDP of 425W
  • No OC support
  • Limited to the Chinese market
  • Launching next year

Any effort by board partners or end users to surpass the 4800 TOPS restrictions could potentially trigger additional U.S. sanctions, an outcome NVIDIA aims to avoid. Additionally, the site confirms a reduction in Thermal Design Power (TDP) from 450W to 425W. It is not confirmed whether TGP (Total Graphics Power) will reach 450W, or the 425W is a strict limit that cannot be broken in any way.

What is evident that the RTX 4090D differs significantly from the standard 4090, and it shouldn’t be using the same name. While certain aspects such as memory specifications may be shared, limitations are expected in CUDA cores, clocks, TDP, and overclocking support for this particular variant.
