AMD Threadripper 7000 launching this fall with up to 96 cores

A series of slides from AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 presentation have been shared by Underfox.

These slides corroborate essential details regarding the upcoming “Storm Peak” Threadripper series, featuring the Zen4 architecture. They provide information on the release date, performance expectations, and at least one SKU configuration. Although Underfox did not disclose the source of these slides, they appear sufficiently official and align with previous rumors.

Firstly, the confirmed information points to a fall release date, albeit without delving into specific dates. To be exact, the fall season commences on September 22 in the Northern Hemisphere, implying that the new series may launch in a matter of days.

Regarding performance, the slides mention an anticipated 20% increase compared to the Threadripper PRO 5000 series. However, these claims lack additional details, such as the specifics of the tests or whether they pertain to single-core or multi-threaded performance. Nonetheless, the third slide verifies that the series will support up to 96 cores, marking a 50% boost over the TR PRO 5000 series. This suggests that the 20% improvement likely pertains to the single-core Zen4 boost.

Another slide claims that 96 core Threadripper PRO can offer up to 75% more renders per day, as rendering task demonstrated by AMD took only 657 seconds compared to 56 core Xeon W9-3495X 1125 seconds.

The AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 series will require a new socket, as the entire platform shifts to a different package. This transition enables AMD to introduce new technologies for the Threadripper series, including PCIe Gen5 and DDR5 memory technology, which were unavailable in the Zen3-based series.

In terms of leaks, it is anticipated that there will be at least four distinct SKUs: TR PRO 7995WX with 96 cores, 7985WX with 64 cores, 7975WX with 32 cores, and 7955WX with 16 cores. Nevertheless, this may not constitute the complete list. It appears confirmed that the highest boost clock will reach 5.1 GHz, and the TDP will increase by 70W, reaching 350W on the new platform.
